Silver Ferns vice-captain Laura Langman notched up a milestone in the first Test on Tuesday night, becoming only the second New Zealander to play 50 matches against Australia.

The only other Silver Fern to achieve the feat is Irene van Dyk, who played against the Diamonds 54 times.

When told of the milestone, Langman gave her trademark smile.

“I always want to be putting my hand up to play. I just really enjoy the challenge and the competition that playing against Australia provides,” Langman said.

“Being able to get free or put in a good feed between Sharni or Laura, there’s nothing better than that.

“It is a milestone but I’m not really one to celebrate or get too hung up on it. I’m just really grateful to be playing.”

With 50 Tests against Australia under her belt, is there one match that stands out?

“The games at the pinnacle events are always up a notch. Every game against Australia is intense but when it’s at a pinnacle event there’s a lot more riding on it,” she said.

“Delhi, Melbourne and the world champs final this year all spring to mind. I just love playing against Australia and footing it with the best.”

Tonight, the Silver Ferns will be looking to even up the New World Netball Series for the Constellation Cup, after going down in the opening Test 50-44. It’s a challenge Langman says they’re up to – with the help of their parochial SilverFans.

“We’re still striving to find our missing ingredient but it’s such a great challenge. The game that is getting played is between two quality sides and there’s not a lot between us,” Langman said.

“You can’t really fault New Zealand Netball fans. They’re there for every match, every occasion and they know everything about every player.

“No doubt they’ll be out in full force tonight. It’s the second Test of what is shaping up as a very competitive series.”
