SKY NEXT backs Silver Fern Phoenix Karaka

Phoenix Karaka becomes the first netballers to join SKY NEXT programme
Silver Ferns defender Phoenix Karaka has become the first netballer to receive funding, professional support and promotion through the SKY NEXT programme.

The exciting initiative provides backing for New Zealand’s up and coming athletes, facilitating and enabling them to reach their full potential with Karaka selected in conjunction with Netball New Zealand.

Karaka joins Commonwealth Games gold medallists and other young world class athletes in the SKY NEXT programme.

“It’s a real confidence boost to know that whoever selected me to be the SKY NEXT representative for Netball believes that I have a future in the sport which has given me the courage to finally back myself in what I do,” Karaka said.

The 21 year old said although the extra funding was nice, it was the opportunity to learn from other athletes and mentors about being a professional athlete that appealed the most.

“For me it’s about being able to learn more about being a professional athlete,” she said.

“Being in that environment with other athletes is going to be great, seeing what they have to go through and sacrifice to get those gold medals.”

As a kiwi company and New Zealand’s home of sport, SKY Television is incredibly passionate about athletes achieving on the world stage. The programme was born from an idea originally put forward in 2011 and has evolved to become SKY Next.

SKY NEXT founder Marisa Carter says she is excited to have Phoenix join the SKY NEXT team with the Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 in August.

“Netball is a loved sport by New Zealanders, and we are looking forward to supporting Phoenix realise her dream of becoming a Silver Fern,” Carter said.
