The Silver Ferns suffered a dramatic 58-57 extra time loss to Australia in a tension-filled final of the World Netball Championships in Singapore tonight.

The defending champions staged a stirring second half fight-back to deny the Silver Ferns back-to-back gold medals after their Commonwealth Games win last year.

Towering goal shoot Caitlin Bassett proved the difference after being subbed on at halftime, her accuracy under the hoop proving pivotal as Australia clawed their way back to force the match into extra time.

The Silver Ferns played their part in another epic trans-Tasman battle but ultimately could not nail the numerous opportunities they had to close out the match.

VOTE – SKY Sport Moment of the Year

There were few surprises in either line-up with Joline Henry, Casey Williams and Leana de Bruin winning the race to form the Silver Ferns defensive unit where competition for places was tight. For Australia, Kimberlee Green edged out Chelsea Pitman in the pivot’s role at wing attack while the towering Susan Fuhrmann was preferred at goalkeeper ahead of Laura Geitz.

The opening stanza proved no different to most trans-Tasman clashes as the two old rivals engaged in an abrasive, tight and frantic clash. Abrasive defence was evident as both teams were guilty of high penalty contact counts. The Silver Ferns were able to disrupt Australia’s momentum on attack with Laura Langman and Temepara George dictating the pace and working Irene van Dyk and Maria Tutaia into favourable shooting positions.

Opening a three-goal buffer, the Silver Ferns had to withstand a strong Australian fightback, three straight goals levelling the scores before the New Zealanders eased out to a 12-10 first quarter lead.

With Pitman introduced for Australia on the resumption, it was the Silver Ferns who made the better of starts. A trademark Casey Williams intercept igniting the Silver Ferns as they pushed out to a five-goal lead before the Australia came storming back.

VOTE – Woman’s Day People’s Choice

Defenders Mo’onia Gerrard and Julie Corletto put the squeeze on the Silver Ferns attacking line, shutting down the scoring options and leaving New Zealand rattled. Shooters Natalie Medhurst and Catherine Cox found their radars at the other end as the intensity built and Australia enjoyed a momentum shift. The Silver Ferns responded to the cut and thrust of a tough and uncompromising clash in the best possible fashion as a late surge turned proceedings back in their favour.

Van Dyk played a pivotal role under the hoop, the veteran getting the better of Fuhrmann as she held sway in the circle while her attacking partners delivered a better supply of ball enabling the Silver Ferns to skip out to a 26-20 halftime lead.

Looking to resurrect their fortunes, Australia were forced into changes with Geitz replacing Fuhrmann and the long-limbed Bassett taking over at goal shoot from Cox.  It proved an inspiring move from Australian coach Norma Plummer, the accurate Bassett slotting in seamlessly as the Diamonds fired in seven successive straight goals to level the scores five minutes into the third stanza.

The stifling defensive play of Gerrard and Corletto continued to rattle the Silver Ferns attacking line, Australia hitting the lead for the first time with six minutes of the quarter remaining. The Silver Ferns were forced to dig deep, captain Williams struggling on an injured calf as the intensity lifted another notch and the teams went goal-for goal to the three-quarter break.

In an enthralling third quarter, the Silver Ferns just managed to hold out a late-charging Australia to head into the run home with a narrow 36-35 lead.

Silver Ferns coach Ruth Aitken resisted the temptation for change, a gutsy and obviously hobbling Williams battling on in a tense and frantic final stanza. And it was the New Zealanders who had the better of the exchanges, finding more fluidity on attack, van Dyk rising to the challenge superbly while a brave Williams hauled in a clutch of vital intercept ball.

However, Australia were not finished clawing back a three-goal deficit to take the lead by one with four minutes to go as the teams went toe-to-toe to the line forcing the all too familiar extra time after the teams couldn’t be separated.
