Paseka books ticket to NWC2015

The smile on 20-year-old Malia Paseka’s face said it all.

Reflecting on the good news about her selection in the Silver Ferns team for Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 (NWC2015), Paseka said it all came as a surprise.

“We were all told to go into the team room and then Casey and Laura yelled out ‘congratulations’, so that’s how they did it,” Paseka recalled.

“Then Wai came in and gave us all hugs, it was really special and I cried.

“When I finally got hold of my Dad in Sydney, he was so proud and happy and of course the Netball World Cup is in Sydney so hopefully he’ll come along to watch.”

The last time Malia Paseka was due to play in front of Netball New Zealand national selectors she rolled her ankle and ended up in a moon boot.

One year on, the 20-year-old had a second chance and made the most of it; demonstrating her athletic prowess and shooting talent to book her ticket to NWC2015.

Throughout the three-day trials, Paseka was clear on what she needed to show the panel of selectors who would determine the trajectory of her Netball career.

I’ve been concentrating lately on trying to simply turn and shoot, and get my shooting percentage up around at least 85 percent,” she said.

“I knew I needed to focus on not only my play around the circle and shooting accuracy, but feeding the other shooter well because it’s not all about me, it’s about combining well with the other shooters and how well I fit into the team.

“I knew I just had to play to my strengths.”

Fans have the opportunity to support the Silver Ferns on the road to NWC2015 with the New World Netball Series for the Taini Jamison Trophy later this month, when they face Fiji and South Africa.

A special presentation to the team will take place at the conclusion of the final Test Match against the SPAR Proteas on Tuesday 28 July at The Trusts Arena, Auckland. Make sure you secure your seat to farewell the Silver Ferns!
