Silver Ferns count down to opening match

Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu knows what it’s like to play a Netball World Cup in Sydney.

Taumaunu was captain of the Silver Ferns team that fell agonisingly short in 1991 – the last time Netball’s pinnacle event was held in Sydney.

Today – three days out from Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 – Taumaunu put her team through their paces at Allphones Arena, the main venue for this year’s event, for the first time since arriving in the Harbour City on Monday afternoon.

She says their campaigns (2015 and 1991) are not too dissimilar; the main difference being the advent of the ANZ Championship which means preparation time is shortened.

But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed over the years…

She knows that when the team steps out on court at 4.50pm (local time) on Friday for their opening match of NWC2015 they’ll be carrying with them the hopes and good wishes of a sporting-mad nation.

“We are really grateful for the support we receive…the support has been magnificent and it really does build us up… we’re looking forward to all the kiwis turning up and supporting us in Sydney,” Taumaunu said.

On Friday 7 August, 2015, the Silver Ferns will start their Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015 campaign against Barbados. Fans in New Zealand can catch all the action LIVE on SKY Sport 4 (check your local guides).
