A Waikato stalwart, midcourt maestro Amigene Metcalfe represented the province at senior level for 13 years, becoming the region’s most capped player with over 175 appearances in the process.
After a long wait and on the back of an inspiring 2004 NPC, Metcalfe realised a dream when she made the Silver Ferns team for the end of season tour to Australia at the age of 30.
Small in stature, Metcalfe was equally adept at centre and wing attack, her natural home being more predominantly on the wing where her dynamic movement and silky ball skills shone brightest.
A diligent trainer, Metcalfe’s nimble footwork, eye for a gap and deft feeding skills from the circle edge were standout features.
A naturally talented sportswoman, Metcalfe also captained the New Zealand touch team for many years.
