Elizabeth Rowley profile

Elizabeth Rowley

1967, 1969

C
WA
WD
First selected for the Silver Ferns in 1967, Southland midcourter Elizabeth Rowley made her debut at the Netball World Cup in Perth that year as an 18-year-old.

An injury to a fellow defender opened the door for Rowley in Perth, her defensive versatility paving the way for opportunities at wing defence. Rowley was also able to cover centre and wing attack.

Depending on the type of game the coach wanted, Rowley generally played alternate games with Pam Hamilton, at wing defence. This proved highly successful, the pair impressive with their individual skill sets while forming a potent defensive line with Tilly Hirst and Billie Irwin.

Part of the Silver Ferns’ inaugural Netball World Cup-winning team, Rowley was re-selected in the next New Zealand team, in 1969, a two-Test Australia tour which was drawn one-all.
